The latest instalment in the excellent In Session series focuses on Wayne Bennett, who earned a huge reputation for his Jazz-tinged, Blues guitar work with Bobby 'Blue' Bland during the 1950s and '60s. He was active as a sideman from 1950 until his sad death from heart failure in 1992, aged 59. Unlike most other accompanists Bennett never recorded as a leader under his own steam, largely because he never viewed himself as a specific genre guitarist. This unique collection features him backing Amos Milburn, Mr Sad Head, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Arbee Stidham, Morris Pejoe, Elmore James, Otis Rush, Betty Everett, Bobby Bland and Junior Parker. This is the first compilation of Wayne Bennett's session work to be issued under his own name.
